The story of the Rich Salik Pro/Am goes back more than thirty years to when surfing-pro Rich found out, at the young age of 23, his kidneys were failing due to kidney disease. Thanks to the generosity of his twin brother Phil, a donor transplant was was possible and Rich survived. Complications with medications led doctors to tell Rich that he would never surf again, a devastating blow to a sport both brothers loved.

Determined not to let some pesky doctors ruin his beloved sport, Rich developed a specialized pad to protect his transplanted kidney, and by April 1975 he was professionally surfing once again and won second place at the first event he’d entered after surgery.

In 1976, among the many festivals he attended, he worked with his brother to establish the first professional surfing competition in Cocoa Beach. Proceeds from the first event, a mere $125, were given directly to dialysis patients in need by the Salik brothers.

Though the benevolent Richard Salik passed away on July 2nd, 2012, that same spirit of generosity that has continued on for this year’s 28th Annual Rich Salik Pro/Am Surf Festival.

Liquid Nitro Energy is proud to sponsor this great cause.
